Where Social Distancing
Does Not Apply!
John 20: 11-18
Jesus was practicing “social distancing” over 2,000 years ago!
“Do not cling to ME…’
17 Jesus said to her (Mary), “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’
1. Why did Mary want to hold Jesus?
2. What did she not want to let go of?
Vs11) – As Mary stood outside the tomb crying, what was she thinking about?
*I cannot go on?
*I cannot live without Him?
Vs13) – “I do not know where they have laid Him.” Was there some panic in her voice?
Behavioral change is difficult.
Today we are asked to do and not do many things we are so accustomed to. We want to hold onto the things we know and feel safe with. We think about tomorrow and fear and panic creep into our thinking.
We are asked to practice “social distancing”. These thoughts and feelings are not much different from Mary’s as she was trying to process and reason in her own mind what life will look like going forward.
Vs 15) – Jesus asked Mary, “Why are your crying, who are you looking for?”
A great question! We can ask the same thing today. What are we looking for, why are we worried?
Vs 16) – Jesus calls Mary by her name! (Jesus knows HIS sheep by name- Listen to Sundays message April 19th, 2020 for more about this)
Here is the great comfort for her and us, today. Jesus knows us by name. He will always be present with us because He is going to The Father and will send us The Great Comforter, The Holy Spirit! (John 14:26; John 16:7)
Vs17) – “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”
*There is to be a new relationship Jesus will have with His children forever more! (Ephesians 1:13-14)
*He will never leave us nor forsake us… (Hebrews 13:5)
For Christians “social distancing “does not apply to our relationship with God, our Heavenly Father! He wants us to draw near to HIM!
The LORD is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth. (Psalm 145:18)
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10: 19-22)
The Disciples experienced a change in how their relationship would be with Jesus.
1. Servants (John 15:15
2. Friends (John 15:15)
3. Brothers (John 20:17)
We are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus!
As we live with new physical “social distancing” guidelines, let us never forget we do not have to practice spiritual “social distancing” with God our Father.
